Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is generally considered low-risk, so it’s unlikely to cause harm. Reported benefits vary depending on the individual, the type of oil used, and how consistently the practice is performed. Personally, I say bye. A healthy mouth already has a balanced ecosystem of beneficial bacteria and yeast that doesn’t require an oil bath. Your saliva is naturally designed to protect and nourish your oral tissues and it’s all the support your mouth really needs.
Brushing with Baking Soda for Teeth Whitening
My concern is that baking soda can be abrasive, depending on the formulation and how it’s used. Some people have exceptionally strong enamel and may tolerate abrasive products well, but that isn’t true for everyone. While abrasiveness can help remove surface stains, professional dental cleanings can accomplish the same goal more safely. Since enamel does not regenerate, it’s important to be cautious with anything that may wear it down over time. A healthy diet, good oral hygiene habits, and a gentle, non-abrasive toothpaste are typically sufficient. For me, it’s a bye. If I’m whitening my teeth, I prefer custom take-home whitening trays prescribed by a dental professional, which can brighten teeth without damaging enamel.
Waterpik
This one is an easy buy. Personally, I use it as an addition to flossing rather than a replacement. I’m not ready to throw away my floss, but a Waterpik can be an excellent tool for improving oral hygiene. Use it on a low to medium setting and take your time. It’s especially beneficial for individuals with limited mobility or dexterity, helping clean areas that traditional flossing may miss.
Tongue Scraping
Similar to oil pulling, a healthy mouth and lifestyle help maintain a balanced oral microbiome. The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate beneficial bacteria. That said, the tongue can accumulate debris and bacteria over time. Tongue scraping can be a helpful part of an oral hygiene routine, keeping the surface of the tongue clean, stimulating circulation, and promoting fresher breath. This one gets a buy.
